3,000 sq ft gym amenity in a Manhattan Apartment Building

Objective

Transform The Helena’s outdated gym into a modern, functional, and high-performance wellness space that aligns with the building’s luxury branding and commitment to sustainability. The redesign aimed to create an inviting and versatile environment for residents, accommodating a variety of fitness activities while optimizing space and integrating custom, eco-friendly elements. The project needed to meet the diverse needs of a discerning user base and enhance the overall residential experience at The Helena.

THE PROBLEM

The existing gym at The Helena was outdated, underutilized, and failed to meet the needs of its upscale resident demographic. The space had a disjointed layout, limited functional areas, and did not reflect the building’s commitment to sustainability. Additionally, the low ceiling height (8 ft) presented challenges for incorporating modern gym equipment and creating an open, inviting environment.

The Process

SPX FIT conducted a comprehensive analysis of the current space, foot traffic, and user preferences to identify areas for improvement:

  1. Space Optimization: We redesigned the layout to enhance movement flow, reallocating underused areas to accommodate a central functional training zone.
  2. Custom Equipment Integration: Low-profile equipment, including custom half racks and cable systems, was selected to address ceiling height constraints without sacrificing functionality.
  3. Sustainable Design Choices: Eco-friendly flooring, recycled rubber mats, and sustainably sourced wood accents were incorporated to align with the LEED-certified building's ethos.
  4. Enhanced User Experience: We integrated a variety of workout zones offers residents a tailored workout experience.
The Solution

The redesigned gym at The Helena now serves as a premier wellness space, catering to diverse resident needs with a modern, luxury aesthetic:

  • Versatile Equipment Mix: Includes premium options like Watson free weights, Technogym treadmills, and Concept2 rower.
  • Multi-Functional Zones: Central turf area for group training, a dedicated stretch and recovery zone, and strategically placed cardio and strength equipment.
  • Brand Cohesion: Custom-branded finishes and cohesive design elements reflect The Helena’s upscale brand identity.
